As much as we all love to see our dogs having fun and enjoying everything the great outdoors has to offer, from muddy puddles to seaweed lined shores, we also want a clean, fresh smelling dog curled up on the sofa! I mean come on, damp dog is not the most desirable fragrance for the home, no matter how much we love them. And whilst, it's all too easy to get the air freshener out or light the candles, we want our dogs to feel fresh after their adventures; so bath time it is!
Well, as many of you will already know, here at The Don Dog Company HQ, we currently have two German Shepherds who like to get very wet and very muddy. Exploring the local countryside is great in the summer, but in the winter, it's a whole different story.
We have Nala, now she's quite a lady but certainly doesn't walk around a muddy puddle to mind her paws! Then there's Stanley... he charges through anything and everything, loves to dig and if we can chuck in some water for good measure, then he is as happy as a pig. In. Muck! We also used to have Sadie, a working Cocker Spaniel who was on a completely different level and enjoyed rolling in just about anything and everything!
It's safe to say that as dog owners, we soon discovered that an outdoor tap was essential and fortunately the husbands plumbing skills meant that we got a double whammy hot and cold tap, which meant lovely warm showers for the dogs! What more could they ask for?
Well.... soap! Beautiful, fresh smelling soap!
We used to use bottled shampoo, but then made a conscious decision to try and reduce the amount of plastic bottles we were purchasing and do our bit for the environment so we moved to soap bars. They were literally, the best idea ever! Gone were the days of trying to measure out the correct ratio of shampoo to water and fiddling around with wet hands trying to get the lid back on the bottle before it got knocked over by the dogs.
In order to keep things fresh and exciting, we switch between two beautiful scents; the very refreshing Eucalyptus, Lemon & Mint and the subtle Tea Tree & Clay. Both soap bars do the job of transforming our very dirty dogs into beautiful clean dogs that smell divine. We also feel great, knowing that we are reducing our plastic use, due to the products' eco-friendly packaging and using a product which is free from artificial ingredients and not tested on animals. What's not to love?!
Hand-made in the stunning harbour village of Clovelly, Devon, by skilled artisans at The Clovelly Soap Company, our 'Dirty Dog Soap' is made using traditional methods which retain the natural glycerin which is a by product of the process and helps to moisturise whilst the soap cleanses.
Whilst perfect for regular use on our working Cocker Spaniel's coat, we don't wash our shepherds as often, so as to preserve the natural oils in their coat, but oh boy does it feel luxurious when we do!
Each time I wash the dogs, I can't help but feel like I'm a little bit closer to one of our favourite places - Clovelly. However, it isn't long before I'm transported back from sunny afternoon walks along the pebble beach, listening to the sound of the cascading waterfalls and enjoying the fresh pot of prawns whilst sat on the harbour wall as the dogs shake vigorously and I realise I'm in my garden, covered in wet dog hair! Oh the joys!
